Your Bucket List....What are you missing?

No matter who you are, there is probably something you really really want or something you really want to do. Some experience, achievement, or monumental outcome that fuel moments of joy as the thoughts of reaching this milestone run through your mind. These things or events will inspire you, as you commit to harnessing your energy and focus to ensure these become a possibility.

This pursuit can be consuming and commonly we talk of converting these dreams or thoughts to reality by way of a Bucket List. It’s a well communicated and celebrated way to help you achieve whatever you’ve always wanted. A bucket list is an incredible mental tool to keep your dreams alive and achievements are far more likely. But do these large life events detract from us creating an overall life experience that is fulfilling and rewarding? Do we tolerate what we don’t need to in order to feel the rewards of our bucket lists? What about all the smaller moments in life that give us daily joy and happiness?

Purpose & Flow's Ben Summons shares some details from his story....

I was carrying the load of a high profile, diverse, challenging role as an expat corporate professional living in Asia. I was away from the family often with travel, my work hours long and intense. Occasionally throughout this I allowed my thoughts to escape and focus on the experiences I had penned in my “Bucket List”. These thoughts brought me moments of relief and escapism, my list included things that allowed me to access my passions, connect to those I loved and showcased my achievements. They felt good when I thought of them and even better when I was able to live them out. In fact, sometimes after I’d achieved them, I would feel the post bucket list slump, knowing that I had to head back to the grind where life was often not the way I would have liked.  I was curious though, how could I live my life in such a way where these large moments of joy became smaller, more frequent? How could I incorporate what I loved about my list to make my every day more fulfilling and joyful. Was this even possible? I wasn’t so sure.

Fast forward nearly 10 years and I now find myself living, coaching, and understanding bucket lists in a different way. It is in fact possible to live your life with the feeling you have when fulfilling those bucket list items. Here at Purpose and Flow we believe that life consists of a number of buckets that need a list. These buckets are the areas of life that contribute to your fulfilment. They can be family, career, athletic pursuits, travel etc… Each bucket needs a list with both big and small things to tick off. The list is in fact a vision, a vision of what good looks like if you are living that bucket well. If you can work daily toward the vision in each bucket, your list gets ticked off, you feel accomplished you are living your life with intention and awareness. Things just begin to feel better and be better daily.

The moment you put your pen to paper with what you want to achieve in all your life buckets, you’re already changing the way you think and act. You are mentally putting your intentions forward and your behaviour will begin to change. Chances are, you’ll start to feel excited about the possibility of having or experiencing things you’ve always wanted everyday! Knowing what you want and writing it down is the catalyst for great things to come. Your visions will begin emerge in your conscious thoughts at random times of the day as you envision your bucket list and realise your life in changing for the better.

Having a vision (a list) for your life buckets is perhaps the greatest tool that you can utilise to get what you want and live how you desire. When you focus on these visions your time and energy goes into acting them out and what you receive back is something extraordinary. You’ll be working towards big and small goals, achieving them both but enjoying the journey along the way with your everyday life experience more joyful and happy.

Having your Bucket Lists and the actions to bring them life is what living purposefully is all about.
